Honey Badgerby Q®: Your new personal offensive weapon. The original Honey Badger was developed at AAC by former Q owner and CEO Kevin Brittingham and his R&D team... AUSTIN, TX — Let's get this straight: in movies and TV, silencers are always wrong. The way silencers are used on screen - often attached to the barrel of an assault rifle, assault rifle, or high-caliber pistol, slaughtering the bad guys while the other bad guys, blissfully unaware, quietly sipping tea in the hallway - is simply impossible. . Silencers, more correctly (and more accurately) called "suppressors", do not

This is first hand information from hours on the range with SilencerCo's Jason Schauble, where we fired several hundred rounds of various sizes and shapes on a wide range of different firearms. With the exception of small-caliber ammunition fired from carefully designed weapons, silencers are far from silent. They are damn noisy.

Again later. Another thing is that Hollywood is completely wrong. The heroes regularly fire hundreds of shots without earplugs and are able to continue the conversation immediately afterwards. Anyone who has ever fired a gun can tell you that without hearing protection, a few nearby shots are enough to temporarily stun you - guns really are that loud.

So the companies that make and sell mufflers have an uphill battle ahead of them. They contradict the popular belief that these products are assassination tools best suited for stealth killing people, and that there are several reasons other than "assassination" or perhaps "taking control of Nakatomi Plaza" for which someone would need to have them. But after a few hours of shooting, we got the impression that silencers are actually useful even for casual gun owners. And even if you're completely unarmed, the technology that steals most of the gun noise is mesmerizing.

This technology is the reason why we ended up on the test site. This is clearly not "Guns Technica" and we don't often aim to cover weaponry advances. However, being able to try silencers on a dozen different weapons to understand how they work was too much to resist. So we went to Austin and met Schäuble, who brought a real range of firearms and silencers from SilencerCo to show us how it all works.

If Jason Schauble's name seems vaguely familiar, it's because it's not the first time Arc has met him. Schauble is the former CEO of TrackingPoint, which makes precision (and very expensive) Linux-based firearms. We recently wrote about TrackingPoint in August when we had some time with the company's pre-production AR-15 rifles. We mentioned at the time that Schauble had left the company a few months earlier, but hadn't gone anywhere.

Turns out he crossed town to join SilencerCo, working at the company's Austin, Utah branch as chief revenue officer. His past experience with Remington and Advanced Armament Corporation (not to mention his active duty in the Marine Corps) seems to have prepared him well for this job. When we got to the Best of the West lineup, the same lineup we filmed with TrackingPoint, Schäuble already had a long table with guns and silencers on it.

It turns out that SilencerCo is a major player in a seemingly unknown industry. Although the company employs only 125 people, the company accounts for approximately 40% of the national muffler market and therefore accounts for the majority of the more than 100,000 mufflers purchased each year in the United States. The company has been selling mufflers since 2009 and this is a growing market. According to marketing materials provided by SilencerCo, muffler sales in the US are growing at about 20% per year. In 2014, SilencerCo plans to sell about 40,000 devices to customers ranging from individuals to local law enforcement and military.

SilencerCo was originally founded by two guys named Josh Waldron and Jonathan Schultz, a photographer and sound engineer. The couple were frustrated with both the muffler buying process and what they saw as the lack of customer service from the existing muffler manufacturers (so they decided to start their own business to get more done). One of the first products designed and built by the duo was the Osprey muffler, a non-circular "fancy" muffler that stands out from its typically cylindrical counterparts. "Eccentric" here means that the bore through which the bullet passes does not pass through the middle of the silencer. SilencerCo made this choice because most cylindrical silencers actually extend beyond the front sights of the pistol, covering them and making it difficult to aim effectively. The design of the Osprey avoids this, as most of its innards are under the bore, leaving scopes usable.
